Try to avoid any direct rays or a light that will heat everything around it . . . Like the visor. That way the heated visor will not remain HOT when the light is turned off. Warm is okay. HOT is not. There are some heating lamps that are so safe and can even turn off, automatically, when they become overheated. You should not pay anymore than about $25 for a submerged heater though. Anyway, the filtration system, to me, is more important for the turtle’s health . . . Really.

As far as lights, we use Full Spectrum Lights. They produce light just like the sun.

All of our turtles are water turtles, so we have water heaters. Keeping the water at temp keeps the tank at temp.

Our turtle setup: 250 gal tank. 6 turtles. Island, some underwater stuff. Nothing that they can really take a bite out of though, since they try to eat everything we put in there.

If you would rather talk to somebody face to face, look for a pet store in your area that specializes in amphibs and reptiles. They will have mostly snakes, but should be able to get you what you need.

do you have a basking area for your turt? i have a regular heat lamp for my 2 turtles. and i have a 100watt reptile bulb from petsmart. You also may need a UVA/UVB bulb. i bought mine from petsmart, it was about $30. as far as a filter, you need one that is for twice the amount of water you have in your tank. turtles produce alot more waste then fish. so, i would say if you have a 25 gallon tank you would probly want a 50 gal. filter.

you may want to buy a water heater, the water needs to be around 75 deg. if it falls below 70 they go into hibernation mode and stop eating and sleep alot.

You will need a way bigger tank in the future. For lights you need a UVB bulb (5.0) NOT 10.0!! And a regular house bulb for heat. If you dont have those 2 things your turtles shell will turtle out soft and he will die. Here is everything you will need- http://www.redearslider.com/startup.html
